The newly released Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination results in Nigeria appear to give credence to the widely held belief that the standard of education in Africa’s most populous nation urgently needs revitalization.

JAMB, an entrance examination conducted for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, recently released its results—and it was a massive failure. About 78 percent of students scored below 200 out of a total of 400 marks.

Although the examination board later clarified that a technical glitch caused the scripts of 379,997 students to be wrongly marked—leading to an order for a resit of those students—nearly 2 million candidates sat for the exam. This means that, even when the error is factored in, the overall failure rate remains alarmingly high.

However, Nigerian tech founder Chi Ofoegbu says he has identified ways to make studying not only easier but also more efficient for students. To help students study better, he launched AIStudyCards, an AI platform that converts course materials into quizzes and flashcards within seconds.

“Quizzing yourself before an examination is an efficient way to prepare. What our platform does is go through the study material and generate quizzes that focus on the most important topics and areas of concentration,” Chi Ofoegbu explained.

But there’s more. Users of AIStudyCards can also summarize their course materials. This, according to him, is particularly useful in scenarios where students haven’t covered all the content but need a quick overview before an exam.

Additionally, one of the standout features of AIStudyCards is the ability for users to connect with friends, make them study mates, and track each other’s learning progress.

“We want to make learning a social experience,” he said.

This method, known as collaborative learning, is not only fun but has also been proven by research to be an effective way to help students assimilate information more efficiently.

“Results revealed notable enhancements among students who participated in courses utilizing the collaborative learning method. These enhancements included heightened academic performance, elevated levels of critical thinking, increased self-confidence, and improved clinical decision-making abilities,” a study published on ScienceDirect found.

Nigeria’s educational system is believed to be at a critical point—where not only is the standard of education falling, but students also appear to lack motivation to study. One of the reasons for this decline is that the traditional method of imparting knowledge is no longer effective. AIStudyCards offers a promising and innovative alternative.
